Dalton Residents Rally Against Proposed Landfill

Residents and local leaders from Dalton and other North Country towns, having watched their neighbors in Bethlehem suffer their proximity to Casella Waste System’s landfill there, are rallying against another proposed landfill by the company in their area.

The proposed project would be built less than a mile from Forest Lake and nearby the Ammonoosuc River.

Protesters rallied at a public meeting hosted by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, who are slated to approve or deny the proposed project. The event brought out numerous local residents, and Senate candidates from both parties, one of whom said that the issue “blurred party lines,” as a “health issue,” rather than a “partisan” one.

At issue was not only the pristine natural location of the proposed site, but the contentious question of whether trash from other states should be brought to the Granite State at all.
