On April 1st there was a fiery one-car crash at the Bedford Toll Plaza, south of Manchester NH. The story drew state and even national attention because the driver,a well-known voice actor, was rescued from his burning vehicle by a trooper from Governor Kelly Ayotte’s security detail.

What was overlooked in many of the news stories about the accident is that the resulting fire was not from a ruptured fuel tank. The driver was operating an electric car, and when the crash damaged some of the lithium-ion cells, it set off chemical changes that overheated the battery, causing what is called a thermal runaway. Firefighters doused the car with thousands of gallons of water to stop the fire and cool it down, finally allowing a towing operator to haul it away.
